While working at the University of St Andrews, Jessica built some neural networks that outperformed human pathologists, and set out to understand how this was possible. It turned out that neural networks often find meaningful patterns that humans aren't aware of - and she realised that if we could better understand what these models learn from data, we could use them for scientific discovery, instead of just for automation.

Jugal and Jessica founded Leap Labs in early 2023 to make this a reality.
