Derm-Biome Pharmaceuticals carried out a preclinical study in Vancouver to see whether their new skin cream could protect against precancerous skin changes and early skin cancers. Researchers exposed mice to UVB light for many weeks to mimic the way long-term sun exposure can slowly lead to actinic keratosis and then squamous cell carcinoma.
The team applied the cream either before or during this UV exposure to measure whether it could stop these skin problems from forming or getting worse. The study, led by scientists at TransBIOtech and supported by experts at the University of British Columbia and BC Cancer, found that the cream reduced the number and size of precancerous spots and stopped existing tumors from progressing.
The researchers reported that the treatment caused no noticeable side effects, and they even saw the treated skin looking healthier.
