Key points from article :

A new device is transforming prostate cancer surgery in the UK by allowing surgeons to check for cancerous tissue in real time. The Histolog Scanner, now in use at Royal Surrey County Hospital, provides instant imaging of prostate tissue during surgery, eliminating the traditional wait for post-operative pathology results. This breakthrough enables surgeons to remove additional tissue immediately if needed, reducing the risk of leaving behind cancer cells.

Consultant urological surgeon Wissam Abou-Chedid highlighted that this innovation is a “real leap forward” in cancer surgery. By making faster, evidence-based decisions during the procedure, surgeons can improve cancer control while safeguarding patients’ quality of life. Crucially, the device lowers the likelihood of men needing radiotherapy after surgery and helps preserve continence and sexual function—key concerns for patients undergoing prostate cancer treatment.

Royal Surrey’s urology clinical director, Dimitrios Moschonas, noted that the hospital already holds the distinction of being the UK’s busiest single-site centre for robotic prostatectomies. The adoption of the Histolog Scanner builds on this reputation, reinforcing the hospital’s position as a leader in innovative prostate cancer care. In recent years, the team has also been recognised for pioneering approaches, such as teaching patients to safely remove their own catheters at home following robotic surgery, a scheme that earned national award recognition.

This combination of advanced surgical technology and patient-focused innovations reflects a broader shift in cancer treatment—where precision tools and practical care solutions come together to improve survival rates, reduce side effects, and give patients greater independence in their recovery.
