Professor Alexandra Smith is a distinguished epidemiologist at the University of York, where she serves as Professor of Cancer Epidemiology and Co-Director of the Epidemiology & Cancer Statistics Group. Specializing in blood cancers, she helped establish the Haematological Malignancy Research Network (HMRN), a powerful, population-based cohort designed to generate high-quality “real-world” insights into blood cancers. Beyond HMRN, she plays a key role in the European Myelodysplastic Syndromes Registry (EUMDS) and the Horizon 2020-funded MDS-RIGHT initiative, managing and analysing data drawn from across 17 countries. With training from Cambridge and Leeds and a track record of impactful research, Smith’s work focuses on leveraging observational data to better understand incidence, outcomes, and treatment impacts in haematological malignancies.
