World's population is expected to peak at 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s

Some countries have already reached their peak population & others continue to grow

Key points from article :

The United Nations (UN) predicts that the global population will peak at around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s before slightly declining to 10.2 billion by 2100.

This peak is earlier than previously anticipated due to lower fertility rates in large countries like China, with women globally having one fewer child on average than in 1990.

As of 2024, 63 countries, including China, Germany, Japan, and Russia, have already reached their peak population, with this group expected to decrease by 14% over the next 30 years.

While some countries will peak in population between now and 2054, others, including India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the United States, are projected to continue growing through 2054 and potentially peak later in the century.

This population growth is particularly rapid in nine countries, such as Angola, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger, and Somalia, where populations are expected to double between 2024 and 2054.

The UN report, "World Population Prospects 2024," published by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, attributes these findings to factors including lower fertility rates, longer life expectancies, and varying population trends across countries.
