Dr. Meredith A. Hawkins is a distinguished endocrinologist and professor of medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she holds the Harold and Muriel Block Chair in Medicine. She also serves as the director of the Global Diabetes Institute, leading international efforts to address diabetes worldwide.
Dr. Hawkins earned her M.D. cum laude from the University of Toronto and later completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods at Einstein. Her research focuses on the metabolic effects of nutrient deficiency and excess, particularly in the context of diabetes. She has been instrumental in identifying and characterizing malnutrition-related diabetes, now recognized as Type 5 diabetes, highlighting its distinct pathophysiology and the need for specialized treatment approaches.
