Assistant professor at University Medical Center Utrecht
Martijn Koppens, PhD, is a postdoctoral researcher and assistant professor at University Medical Center Utrecht, where he develops cutting-edge models and gene-editing strategies to better understand and treat mitochondrial and metabolic diseases. With a background in epigenetics and organoid systems from his PhD at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and postdoctoral work in Oxford, he now pioneers methods to track and correct mitochondrial DNA mutations in live cells, including organoid co-cultures. Recently awarded a competitive NWO grant, Koppens aims to translate his fundamental insights into therapeutic approaches that could improve outcomes for patients with mitochondrial disorders.
