Dr. Jake Abbott is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah, where he also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Kahlert School of Computing. He directs the Magnetic & Medical Robotics Laboratory, focusing on the use of magnetic fields for non-contact manipulation in robotic systems, particularly within medical applications. Dr. Abbott earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2006. Before joining the University of Utah in 2008, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at ETH Zurich. His research interests include magnetic manipulation, medical robotics, haptics, and microrobotics. Dr. Abbott has been recognized for his contributions to the field, receiving the Best Paper Award in Medical Robotics at ICRA 2017 and securing a $385K NIH grant for telerobotic eye surgery research.
