Ian Hickson

Professor of Drug Discovery Cancer Bioscience at the Newcastle University

At the Cancer Research UK Newcastle Drug Discovery Unit, lead the bioscience team in Drug Discovery, with responsibility for target identification and validation, assay development and support of all drug discovery programs. Supervise undergraduate, Research Masters and PhD students in cancer drug discovery projects.

25 years experience in Oncology, 15 years of Drug Discovery in the Pharmaceutical industry, gained from both small biotech and multi-national pharmaceutical companies. 

PhD (Oncology), from the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research.

Recruited to Janssen in 2008 and led early phase projects, preclinical support for HDAC inhibitor, quisinostat, and responsible for target proposal, validation and due diligence activities. Led prostate discovery lab in EU. Relocated prostate lab to Spring House, PA in 2013 and led biology and project team taking compound from HTL to NME in less than 1 year - presented at AACR 2016 Major Symposium. Clinical candidate, TRC253, is undergoing PhI evaluation.
