Harald Schmidt is a pharmacist and doctor, as well as a professor of pharmacology and personalized medicine at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands. He is researching systems medicine and is currently coordinating the European Union's platform project, REPO4EU. Diseases are being completely redefined, no longer according to symptoms in organs, but according to molecular causes. In contrast to the current chronic therapy of symptoms, this should enable the cure or, even better, the prevention of diseases. The translation of bioinformatics into the clinic is as fast as possible, since new drugs are not sought, but existing ones are repurposed for new indications.
