A 2016 global project to advance large-genome design
The Genome Project–Write (GP-Write) is a major international initiative launched in 2016 to advance the design, synthesis, and testing of large genomes across microbes, plants, animals, and humans. Building on rapid progress in synthetic biology and the declining costs of DNA technologies, GP-Write aims to develop powerful tools and methods for constructing entire genomes, enabling breakthroughs in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. Managed by the Center of Excellence for Engineering Biology, the project shifts the focus from merely reading genetic code to actively writing it, while also emphasising ethical, safety, and societal considerations surrounding large-scale genome engineering.
