New laser test detects dementia types in seconds with high accuracy

The test is faster, cheaper, and over 93% accurate, offering quicker diagnosis

Researchers from University Hospital Southampton and the University of Southampton have developed a laser-based test that could transform how dementia is diagnosed. Currently, diagnosing dementia can take more than two years and involves expensive procedures like brain scans and memory tests. This new technique, called multi-excitation Raman spectroscopy (MX-Raman), offers a faster and cheaper alternative, providing results in just seconds.

The test analyses bodily fluids such as blood or spinal fluid to create a “biochemical fingerprint” that identifies the type of dementia. Early tests show that the method has over 93% accuracy in detecting Alzheimer’s disease, offering hope for faster diagnosis. Early detection is crucial, as many people are diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, when treatments are less effective.

This new approach aims to tackle one of the biggest challenges in dementia diagnosis—distinguishing between different but closely related forms of the condition. By providing a more efficient, accurate, and cost-effective solution, it could significantly improve how dementia is managed and treated.

With more than 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, and numbers expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040, the new technology could lead to better outcomes for patients.

The quicker diagnostic process also means that individuals could begin treatment earlier, potentially slowing disease progression and improving quality of life. This test marks a significant step toward addressing the growing burden of dementia and could play a key role in improving patient care.
