A hospital in Kent has become the first NHS trust in the country to use an artificial intelligence tool designed to spot infections before they become more serious.
Kent and Canterbury Hospital is using a system called MEMORI, which looks at information already collected during routine patient care. This includes blood test results, blood pressure, temperature, medications and other details from a patient’s medical record.
The tool then produces an infection risk score for each patient.
The idea is simple: instead of waiting for obvious signs of infection to appear, doctors and nurses may be able to identify patients who are becoming unwell much earlier.
That could be especially important for hospital-acquired infections, which can sometimes develop quickly and lead to serious complications if treatment is delayed.
MEMORI was developed through a partnership between East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust and UK health technology company Sanome. Hospital staff, including nurses, healthcare assistants, doctors and therapists, were also involved in its development so that the software would fit into everyday clinical work.
For staff, one of the biggest benefits could be time.
Healthcare workers often have to search through large amounts of patient information to understand whether someone’s condition is changing. The AI tool brings different pieces of information together and highlights patients who may need closer attention.
Ward manager Julie Jones said the technology is not intended to replace healthcare professionals. Instead, it is designed to support them and reduce the amount of time spent searching through records.
That could allow nurses and doctors to spend more time directly caring for patients.
The technology also reflects a wider move within the NHS toward greater use of digital tools and artificial intelligence. The NHS has set out plans to make healthcare more digital, with AI expected to play a growing role in areas such as diagnosis, monitoring and administration.
However, systems like MEMORI are not making treatment decisions on their own. The risk score is there to help clinical staff decide whether a patient needs further assessment or treatment.
That distinction matters. AI can process large amounts of information quickly, but medical decisions still depend on trained professionals who understand the patient’s full condition.
The infection tool could be only the beginning. The partnership may eventually explore other ways AI can support hospital care.
The company behind MEMORI also has a personal connection to the problem. Sanome founder Benedikt von Thüngen started the company after his father developed sepsis, a dangerous reaction to infection that can become life-threatening.
Early treatment can make a major difference when infections begin to worsen. If technology can help staff notice warning signs sooner, patients may receive the right treatment before their condition deteriorates.
There are still important questions around how AI should be used in healthcare, including accuracy, patient safety, privacy and how much clinicians should rely on automated systems. Any technology used in hospitals needs careful testing and oversight.
But the Kent trial shows how AI may become part of everyday healthcare in a practical way.
Rather than replacing doctors or nurses, the aim is to give them better information at the right time.
If systems like MEMORI work as intended, the biggest impact may not be a dramatic robot doctor or fully automated hospital. It may be something much simpler: helping healthcare workers spot problems sooner, spend less time searching through data and spend more time with the people they are there to care for.
