A new fingertip test makes routine blood checks easier for everyone

People can get tested at local pharmacies without special lab staff

Key points from article :

Babson Diagnostics in Austin announced that BD, a global medical technology company with long expertise in blood collection, has made a new investment to support the expansion of Babson’s BetterWay fingertip blood-testing service. This funding, which adds to backing from Siemens Healthineers and Emerald Development Managers, will help bring the service to more pharmacies after its initial launch in Austin.

The work centers on research showing that a pea-sized drop of blood from the fingertip can be used to run many common tests for long-term conditions. Babson and BD have collaborated since 2016 to design a small capillary collection device, and this effort resulted in BD receiving FDA 510(k) clearance for its MiniDraw system, which avoids arm needles and large tubes of blood.

Their studies found that many people worry about needles, making a gentler option helpful. BetterWay combines this cleared device with Babson’s own methods that allow pharmacy staff to collect reliable samples, which are then analyzed at Babson’s Austin laboratory.
