Paul Negulescu

Paul Adrian Negulescu is an American-Romanian cell biologist and Senior Vice President at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, recognized for his pivotal contributions to cystic fibrosis research. Alongside Michael J. Welsh, he was awarded the 2022 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine for uncovering the causes of cystic fibrosis and developing effective treatments.
Born in San Francisco to Romanian immigrant parents, Negulescu initially pursued a degree in history before a course in physiology ignited his interest in biology. He earned a dual degree in history and physiology from the University of California, Berkeley, followed by a Ph.D. in physiology. After postdoctoral work, he joined Aurora Biosciences in 1996 and has led the San Diego Research Center at Vertex Pharmaceuticals since 2003.
