Regenerative medicine scientist at the University of Queensland
Dr Abbas Shafiee is a distinguished tissue engineer and regenerative medicine scientist affiliated with the Frazer Institute at the University of Queensland and Metro North Health. Since joining Metro North Health in 2020, he has pioneered research blending 3D bioprinting, stem-cell organoid technology, and biofabrication to create sophisticated skin wound models that promote natural tissue regeneration while minimizing scarring. His doctoral work under Professor Kiarash Khosrotehrani led to the discovery of a novel “Meso-Endothelial Bipotent Progenitor” stem cell population, and his broader research has advanced our understanding of vascular development, cancer metastasis, and skin regeneration. He has also been instrumental in establishing an international consortium focused on dermatological organoid research and has mentored numerous postgraduate students while securing competitive research funding.
