New antibiotic appears promising in early clinical trials

Superbugs are on the rise and we are running out of time

26-Oct-2018

Key points from article :

A new antibiotic tricks bacteria and enter in to bacteria like the Trojan horse in Greek legend.

Cefiderocol binds to iron and bacteria takes the iron bound drug inside, past bacterial defences.

Once inside it kills bacteria in the same way as current antibiotics.

Trials on 448 people with UTIs suggested the drug was as effective as current treatments.

Much larger trials are still needed to be sure of the effectiveness of the new antibiotic.

Trial results were reported in Lancet Infectious Diseases journal.
