Exposure to air pollution over a long time is just as bad as smoking


Long term exposure to air pollutants can give rise to emphysema of lungs.
Fine particulate matter, nitrogen oxide, black carbon and ozone are the 4 main culprit pollutants.
Ground level ozone had the strongest association and was linked to a decline in lung function.
Need to reduce fossil fuel emissions and curb climate change caused by these pollutants.
Study by University of Washington, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Ozone is our friend in the stratosphere but not so much at ground level
