Hundreds of new cancer gene targets discovered
Wellcome Sanger Institute has discovered hundreds of new cancer vulnerabilities.
Researchers disabled every genetic instruction, one at a time, inside 30 types of cancer.
Off the 20,000 genes, six thousand were needed by at least one type of cancer needs to survive.
Ignored genes that were also needed in healthy cells, and those with existing drug approaches.
This left 600 genes as potential targets for new drugs.
Will enable development of drugs that target cancer and leave healthy tissue undamaged.
Aim is to develop a Cancer Dependency Map of vulnerabilities.
Then doctors would test a patient's tumour and give them a cocktail of precision drugs.
