Chemicals identified to reverse mental decline

Research in mice shows ageing brains can potentially be rejuvenated.
Mental decline may be caused by molecules leaking into the brain.
Blood-brain barrier becomes increasingly leaky as we get older.
Scans also showed that the brain was inflamed in the leaky areas.
Chemical that stops damage to the barrier reversed the signs of aging in older mice.
Other study looked at somatostatin-positive neurons, which are involved in coding information.
Chemical identified that amplifies their signal after ageing has weakened it.
Hoping to begin clinical trials on human patients in two years' time.
Research by University of California, Berkeley and University of Toronto.

Mental capacity not lost - just masked by inflammation
