Google's Verily AI spots diabetes damage in eyes
Team at the Aravind eye hospital in Madurai have examined about 15,000 images.
Each image graded and abnormal spots, lesions and bleeding marked.
Added to database built by Google's health tech subsidiary, Verily.
Used to train AI to identify eye complications arising from diabetes.
Often no symptoms until retinal tissue begins to swell, difficult to treat or irreversible.
Used as a screening and referral tool with specialist making final decision.
Time saved in diagnosis can be spent helping the patient manage the condition.
